Why Flahawa Exists

An editor’s letter

Before the sun rises over Naivasha, thousands of hands are already at work.

Roses are harvested in the cool morning air, prepared for journeys that will carry them thousands of kilometres away. A few hundred kilometres away, coffee farmers begin a different ritual; picking, sorting, washing and drying cherries that will eventually become someone’s favourite cup in Copenhagen, Seoul or New York.

Every day, East Africa quietly shapes experiences around the world.

Yet so often, the story begins only when these products reach their destination.

But we rarely know the people, places and decisions that made those moments possible.

Flahawa was born from a simple question:

What if we started telling the story at the beginning?

Behind East Africa’s coffee and flower industries are stories of skill, innovation, livelihoods, communities and resilience.

And above all, people.

As a photographer, I’ve always believed that some of the most important stories live in ordinary moments … the hands sorting coffee cherries, the first light over a greenhouse, the quiet concentration of a coffee grader, the dust on a farmer’s boots after a long day’s work.

These moments rarely make headlines, but they tell us something about the industries and communities they sustain.

Flahawa exists to document those moments.

Through writing, documentary photography, interviews and visual storytelling, we explore the people and places behind East Africa’s coffee, flower and agricultural industries… and the cultures and communities that grow around them.

This isn’t a publication about products alone. It’s about the hands that grow them, the landscapes that shape them, the communities that depend on them and the people building their futures.
